Alright buddy, I saw your offer of help on traceback
This is where I am at.
I have sysadmin
I have uiploaded pspy and I see the following process running
2020/05/12 06:36:01 CMD: UID=0 PID=20563 | /usr/sbin/CRON -f 0 ; /bin/cp /var/backups/.update-motd.d/* /etc/update-motd.d/
My assumption is if I add/modify a text file in /var/backups/.update-motd.d/* it will appear in /etc/update-motd.d/
I then have the 'sleep 30' to read it
This is where I get stuck,
The box doesn't have nano so it can't be edited using that, ,
VI is glitchy even after 2 resets so it can't be edited using that and so.
I am either down a rabbit hole or missing a third option for text document editing.
My plan is to figure out how to get something to copy across as part of the job, then design a script that will read the root.txt and copy it into the /etc/update-motd.d folder
Any nudges will be appreciated
