On HTB ranking

I would like to ask HTB what is the basis for ranking
Why do those who are better than me get the same ranking as me

Well, first, I’d say dont assume people are “better” than you. Once a box is popped it is easy to look like an expert on that, but it can hide lots of mistakes and frustration along the way.

If you go to the points breakdown page - in your case it would be Login :: Hack The Box :: Penetration Testing Labs - it explains the ranking:

Noob >= 0% | Script Kiddie > 5% | Hacker > 20% | Pro Hacker > 45% | Elite Hacker > 70% | Guru > 90% | Omniscient = 100%

The percentages are percentages of total ownerships (challenges, user, root).

Its worth remembering this is a “point in time” system so you dont lose rank when boxes are retired (but you do lose points and percentages).

What this means is you could be the most knowledgeable person in the world, but if you dont drop a lot of boxes your rank stays quite low.

thats very good explanation there from Tazwake.

I’d also add, don’t worry about ranks and points, concentrate on learning and once you have knowledge, the rank and points will be come running. Good luck

@TazWake explained it well as always, but the TL;DR is:
Your rank is based on how many of the currently live machines/challenges you have completed
